Today. In twenty years. At demolition.
Responsible Concrete certifies the origin and composition of aggregates in concrete. Transparent, traceable, and future-proof.
Under pressure of aggregate scarcity, alternative materials are increasingly used in concrete. Nobody registers it. Nobody monitors it long-term.
Alternative materials contain contaminants whose long-term effects are unknown. No registration exists of the composition of concrete in use — making retroactive oversight impossible.
Buildings are increasingly seen as temporary material stores. If future regulation negatively classifies alternative material mixes, building values can decline. CSRD reporting requires material transparency that does not exist today.
Advanced separation technologies that recover high-quality sand and gravel from demolition waste only work when the original concrete was made with traceable, uncontaminated aggregates.
"Know what's in your concrete. Today, in twenty years, and at demolition."Responsible Concrete — Founded by the industry, for the industry
Like FSC for timber, Responsible Concrete certifies the entire chain — from quarry to concrete product. Primary aggregates, recycled equivalents and alternative materials — each independently certified and publicly traceable.
For sand and gravel quarries extracting primary aggregates in a verifiably safe, traceable and environmentally responsible manner. Certified on origin, safety and material parameters.
For recycled aggregates that through advanced separation achieve the same parameters as primary aggregates. Technology-agnostic: the result matters, not the method. Key parameter: water absorption ≤ 3%.
For concrete producers using exclusively RC-G or RC-R certified aggregates. Every delivered product receives a unique trace code, publicly searchable in the project register for 50 years.
New. For concrete producers using alternative materials — residual sands, steel slags, bottom ashes, washed process sands. Certifies composition, origin and safety. Mandatory PFAS testing and leaching analysis. More stringent than CSC.
Responsible Concrete provides certainty across the entire value chain — from the quarry to the investor who still needs to know what's in their building in twenty years.
You extract the most honest raw material there is. RC-G makes that provable — to concrete producers, clients and regulators.
"Stop claiming quality. Start proving it."
In a commoditised market, RC-C or RC-A certification sets you apart demonstrably. Whether you use primary or alternative aggregates — the certification proves you meet the standard.
"Your competitors say it. You prove it."
CSRD obligations, material passports and EU legislation require transparency. RC certification provides exactly the data needed for responsible building, portfolio reporting and future-proof valuations.
"Your building as a responsible investment."
Do you know what you are storing?
In the circular economy, the ability to continuously reuse materials determines their long-term value. Producing materials from residual streams is simply recycling — but the real added value lies in always being able to apply those materials again. That is what keeps the cycle running.
Buildings built with traceable, certified aggregates can be fully recovered at end of life. The sand, gravel and concrete can re-enter the production chain — as high-quality raw materials, not as waste. Buildings become material banks.
For real estate investors, this is not an abstract sustainability argument. It is a question of asset value. A building with certified, traceable materials will carry a demonstrable advantage in future valuations, CSRD reporting, and EU taxonomy compliance — compared to a building where nobody knows what's inside.
"A clear picture of the materials embedded in a building creates a redistribution of value across the entire chain. The building becomes a store of raw materials — and that changes everything about how we value real estate."
Michiel Coumans — Founder, Responsible ConcreteWhen you know exactly which aggregates are in your concrete — certified, traceable, documented for 50 years — your building holds residual material value that can be unlocked at demolition. Not as rubble, but as recoverable raw materials.
Responsible investors and developers face growing obligations to report on material composition and circularity. RC certification gives you the data you need — at building level, per delivery, backed by an independent public register.
Buildings with certified materials command a new kind of premium — not just for sustainability credentials, but because their material content is known, verified and recoverable. That shifts value back towards quality and traceability.
Recycling only works if you know what you started with. Concrete built with RC-certified aggregates can be separated and recovered at the highest quality level. Without traceability, recycling becomes downcycling — and value is lost.
The digital project register is publicly accessible. Clients, architects, authorities and future owners can verify which aggregates were used — even fifty years later.
Search by certificate number, company, project or trace code. Directly accessible — no account required.
Generate material passports conforming to NL/SfB or IFC standard. Directly compatible with digital building dossiers.
Automatic registration via ERP connection. No double administration.

Responsible Concrete is an independent Dutch foundation governed by an experienced Supervisory Board and a professional Director. No commercial interests in the certification chain. Our governance and remuneration policy are fully public.
An initiative of Michiel Coumans, aggregate producer in NL, BE and DE.
Three independent supervisory directors with no commercial interest in the chain. They appoint the Director and approve the annual accounts. Current members: Ruud Burlet and Philippe Van Samang.
Producers, users, science and civil society — each with 25% voting weight. Decisions require 75% majority. No single interest can unilaterally determine the standards.
De Director (Sven Castro, beoogd) voert de dagelijkse leiding. Bezoldiging maximaal de WNT-norm. Volledig gepubliceerd in het jaarverslag.
650+ quarries across NL, BE and DE are joining in year 1. As a founding member you help shape the standards, are listed as a co-founder, and hold the certificate first.
Standard rate is €750/year. Founding members pay €500 in year 1 — including registration and certification mark.
Named on responsibleconcrete.eu and in all press releases at launch.
Your location is scheduled first with KIWA or equivalent. You hold the certification before anyone else.
Founding members can nominate candidates for Chamber 1. You help shape the standards that apply to your sector.
Contact the foundation for more information or to discuss certification for your organisation.
